Hi ! I had the pleasure to meet the band during your visit to Belgium. Your performance at Ieper added a beautiful touch to the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. The next day, when you visited De Haan, at the Belgian coast, it was one of the first warm and sunny days this summer. Although this visit was not published in advance, many people enjoyed the music... on their way to the beach. The people of De Haan and the holiday-makers appreciated and enjoyed your very nice performance !

It was lovely to meet members of the band in Ypres and at De Haan in Belgium last weekend. My brother Edwin arranged for the band to play in De Haan where he lives and encouraged us to visit so it was a fantastic suprise to see the band that originates from the place our Grandmother, Sarah Jane Lewis, was born playing under beautiful blue skies in the bandstand in De Haan (second most beautiful village in Flanders). It was also especially moving to hear the band at the Menin Gate in Ypres in the evening.

Well done to the band who played very well in the extremely hot conditions on Sunday (not very often have we had the chance to say its been too hot this year!).

Although only one day has passed I am now back in Crewe in Cheshire and it seems an age ago. I look forward to coming to hear the band in the near future.

Great to see the old pics, quite embarrasing seeing pics of myself when I played Soprano cornet in the 1970's - brings back many good memories, it was a great part of my life. Keith Reynolds, Soprano Cornet 1972 - about 1975/6 Still involved with music as both a sound tech and Artist & Event Management.

29 May 2006 00:00:00
Hello,

My name is Gillian Hibberd. Although I have no direct connection with the Brass Band Movement, I have with my husband enjoyed brass and military band music for nearly 40 years, and like many people who begin with little knowledge of the history of brass banding, I am finding it a fascinating and addictive topic.

I am doing post-graduate research for my Masters Degree in Histories and Culture at Brighton University and for my dissertation I have chosen to investigate and analyse the current role of the brass band movement in the culture of Britain. I am particularly interested in researching how deindustrialisation, technological advances, gender and ethnicity have affected Brass Bands, together with an examination of what the future might hold for the movement.

I feel the research should be valuable resource for all having an interest in the movement and I am writing to you as I need the urgent assistance of past or present band members and enthusiasts willing to let me have information and views.

I would be extremely grateful if you could have a look at the questionnaire that can be found on my web site www.brassbands.org , copy and paste it into a word processor or email programme, add your comments and email it to me at BrassBandsOrg@aol.com. If you need any further information, or would like to speak to me direct, please give me a ring on Brighton (01273) 732684.

It would also be a huge help in making this a really worthwhile survey for the real benefit of the movement If you could print out the poster that can also be found on my website, and display it in your bandroom or other appropriate place so that as many people as possible are encouraged to participate. I will publishing my dissertation there as soon as it is completed.

Finally I appreciate that you must have a very busy schedule but any help that you or any fellow enthusiasts can give me would be very much appreciated, and thank you for the very real pleasure all involved in banding give to the listening public.

Many thanks in advance for your help and happy banding!

I joined the band in 1942 and played the cornet - E flat bass. Our tutor was the late Mr. Len Evans. Our conductor was a Mr Gillam followed by Reg Pugh and more recently Mr John Pugh MBE. I found the site very interesting and think I may have the undated picture at home. The comradeship between the players was second to none. In later years I trained some of the junior players and I was playing solo cornet with Brian Pugh when we won 1st prize at Belle Vue Manchester. I was in the band for 35 years and made some great friends.

I have taken the liberty of adding your web site to the searchable database of
bands on the Brass Band Portal. The site's entry will become viewable to
the public within 24 hours. I have also added it to the brass band database
search engine; sites are spidered about once a week, so you will have to wait
a few days until your site appears there
